
Davis, Chester O. "Chet"
Chester “Chet” O. Davis, age 84 of Croton, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Metron of Big Rapids Nursing Home in Big Rapids. Chet was born on October 8, 1923 in Davidson, Michigan to Dorsey and Lucy (Toffery) Davis and has been a longtime resident of the Newaygo area. Chet joined the United States Navy and served during World War II in the United States Navy and later sailed with the Merchant Marine. After his discharge, Chet started work as a carpenter and had worked as a union carpenter for Local 100 for several years until his retirement. He met and later married Betty J. Peterson on November 29, 1975 in Newaygo and was an avid gardener, enjoyed fishing, hunting and gaming. Chet was a member of the Newaygo VFW, Sportsman’s Post #4249 and the Croton American Legion Walter F. Howarth Post #381 where he served as Post Commander from 1978-1979 and had been the bar manager for many years.
Chet is survived by his wife, Betty J. Davis of Newaygo; his sons, Chet “Charlie” (Sherri) Davis of Newaygo; David (Beulah) Davis of Grand Rapids; his grandchildren, Dean (Rhonda) Davis of Jackson, Michigan; Michelle (Richard) Hodsdon of Grand Rapids; 4 great grandchildren; sisters, Shirley VanSycle of California; Thelma Ackerman of Florida; his brother, Dick Davis of Florida; half sister, Mary (Tom) McKay of St. Charles, Michigan; Ruth Ann (Bill) Dorsa of Florida; half brother, Dorsey (Loraine) Davis of Merrill, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Davis in 1975; his sisters, Kate Jury in 2007 and Ellen in February 2008.
VISITATION : Monday, May 12, 2008 from 6-8pm at Crandell Funeral Home – White Cloud Chapel. FUNERAL SERVICES : Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 11am at the Crandell Funeral Home – White Cloud Chapel.
