Meyer, Raymond F.

 

Raymond F. Meyer, age 99 of Venice, Florida, formerly of Fremont passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2008.  Ray was born on June 24, 1908 to Henry and Bertha (Erhorn) Meyer in Goodwell Township, Newaygo County.   Ray attended and graduated from White Cloud High School in 1927 and attended Michigan State University briefly in 1927 and 1928.  Ray started work at the Newaygo County Road Commission as a foreman in Fremont and as MSHD-Maintenance foreman at the Newaygo and Hart garages.  He was a partner in the Gratiot Farm Equipment Company located in Ithaca, Michigan for several years and returned to Fremont in the 1950’s where he worked as a welder for Continental Motors in Muskegon until he retirement.  Ray had also been a partner in the Northwood Golf Club in Fremont for several years.  Ray was a long time member of the United Methodist Church of Fremont, Life Member of the Masonic Lodge, F&AM in Fremont and Newaygo and a Life Member of the Saladin Shrine Temple in Grand Rapids.  Ray had a passion his entire life for all sports.  From his high school days where he excelled in team sports to when he had to stop playing golf at the age of 96.   Hunting and fishing were always high on his list of activities.  Ray also had great interest in the Detroit Tigers.  Ray spent many a weekend following his grandchildren across the state as they also competed in sports.

 

Ray is survived by his children, Allan L. (Sharon) Meyer of Caledonia, Michigan; Curtiss B. (Lynn) Meyer of Venice, Florida; Mary Ann (Lyle) Hotchkiss of Sanibel, Florida; nine grand children; 13 great grandchildren; his sisters, Leona Ackerman of Big Rapids, Michigan and Lois Eldred of White Cloud; sister-in-law; Norma Jean Petz of Newaygo; numerous nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, Alice E. (nee McDonald) and Dorothy M. (nee VanNess); grandson, Jason Houghtaling, and granddaughter, Sheryl Meyer; brothers, Lisle and Vernon Meyer; sisters, Eva and Elsie Meyer;

 

Funeral memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 11:00 am from the Fremont United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Williams of the Hesperia Presbyterian Church presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont.  Friends may consider the Shriner’s Hospital for Children for memorial contributions in memory of Ray.  Friends may also send a condolence or share a memory online with the Meyer family at www.crandellfh.com.  Arrangements by Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel.

I'm very sorry to hear that Raymond passed away.  God blessed him with a long life and I hope a happy one.  I worked with Dorothy at Fremont Family Physicians many years ago and visited her several times at her home when she retired.  I had lost track of Ray but am glad to see that you had him with you this long.  God bless all of you and especially Ray.
