Mrs. Elaine Smith, 76, of Fremont passed away Monday evening at Newaygo Medical Care Facility. She was born on August 10, 1922 in Muskegon to Glenn and Phyllis (Dickerson) Shaw and moved to Fremont at the age of nine. She was a graduate of the Fremont High School and married John B. Smith in March of 1943 in Reno, Nevada.  John preceded her in death on March 3, 1960.  She had worked as an accountant at Gerber Products Company in Fremont for over 30 years until her retirement.  She was a member of the First Congregational Church United Church Of Christ in Fremont and had served as treasurer of the Women’s Fellowship for many years.

 

She is survived by her daughter, Jill (Terry) VandenBerg of Fremont; 3 grandchildren, Paige (Brian) Fox; Shannon VandenBerg; Thor VandenBerg; 4 sisters, Virginia Peets of Fremont; Geraldine (Don) Shanahan of Fremont; Jean Geeting of Fremont; Shirley (Forest) Wilson of Fremont; several nieces and nephews.

 

 Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 5, 1999 from the First Congregational United Church of Christ Church with Rev. Frank Vietze presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery.  Friends are asked to consider the Fremont Area Foundation for Habitat For Humanity or the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ for memorial contributions.  Envelopes and arrangements by Crandell Funeral Home in Fremont.
