Obituary

Alethea Mae Utter, age 89, of Kalamazoo, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2001, at the Kalamazoo Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo. Alethea was born on September 12, 1911, in Sitka, Michigan, the daughter of George and Alta (Phillips) Crawford. She was a graduate of Fremont High School, Bronson Hospital School of Nursing, and The School of Anesthesia at the University of Michigan. During her career she was a nurse anesthetist at Bay City, Grand Rapids, Midland, and Kalamazoo. She also served in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII at Stark General Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, and at West Point Military Academy in New York. Following her military service, she became superintendent of Gerber Memorial Hospital and prior to her retirement in 1975 worked at Kalamazoo anesthesiology. Alethea was a member of the Kalamazoo Westwood United Methodist Church, the State and National Associations of Nurse Anesthetists, the Bronson Hospital Alumni Association, and the Kalamazoo Quota Club. On December 8, 1956 she was united in marriage to Marvin E. Utter, who preceded her in death in April of 1962. Surviving are 2 sisters, Beatrice (Bob) Stout and Edith Fredericks, both of Kalamazoo. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held in Kalamazoo. Interment was held at the Holton Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001 with the Rev.
