Alfred D. Truman, 89, of Newaygo passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2000, at Heather Hills Care Center in Grand Rapids. He was born November 2, 1911, in Newaygo to Alfred E. and Elizabeth (Brown) Truman and married Mary Evelyn Basford September 24, 1937. He was the plant engineer at Gerber Products Company until his retirement in 1976, a board member of Fitzpatrick Electric Supply Co., and was a former Commissioner for the City of Fremont. He was a member of the First Congregational Church United Church and a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the U.S. Army serving in Iceland and France during WWII. He is survived by daughter Susan (Tom) VanSlooten of Grand Rapids; sons Donald A. Truman of Boston, Machusetts and Todd E. Truman (Kathy) of Fremont; 9 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son A. Timothy Truman in 1988 and his wife Mary Evelyn in 1998. Funeral Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 23, 2000, from the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Fremont with Rev. Frank Vietze officiating and interment in Maple Grove Cemetery. For a more lasting memorial friends are asked to consider the American Leukemia Foundation.
