Obituary

Alma Marie DeYoung, age 88, of Fremont went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Alma was born on November 17, 1928, to Gerrit and Ida (Klooster) DeHaas. Alma graduated from Fremont High School in 1946 and received her teaching certificate from Calvin College in 1951. She married Jess J. DeYoung on June 22, 1951, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Fremont where she remained a lifelong member. While Jess attended medical school in Ann Arbor, Alma worked at the University of Michigan Health Services. Alma's love of children, her desire to serve others, and her ability to connect with people were the gifts that she used to bless so many people. As she raised her family she took great pride in helping to organize the Calvinettes (GEMS) and served as a leader for many years, she was active in the Helping Hand Society of the Christian School, and volunteered with others to start the yearly Dutch Kitchen fundraiser, she was a member of the Hospital Service League where she chaired the annual Nearly New Sale hospital fundraiser. She was always an active member in her church, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and serving as the Church librarian. Most recently Alma was a tour guide at the Tamarac, a volunteer in the operating waiting room of Gerber Memorial Hospital, and gave her time to the American Decency Association of Fremont. In her "retirement" years she combined her love of people, knowledge of antiques, and her negotiating skills in being a part of Brass Bell Antiques. Alma spent a lot of time volunteering where she developed many cherished, lifelong friendships. But she spent most of her time as a faithful prayer warrior for each one of her family members and her countless friends. Alma is survived by her husband, Dr. Jess DeYoung; children, Randy (Karen) DeYoung of Walker, Craig (Brenda) DeYoung of Kentwood, Michael (Ann) DeYoung of Coopersville, and Julie (Greg) Bootsma of Byron Center; grandchildren, Patricia Gressler, Jennifer (Ben) Prins, Denise (Kevin) Ford, Tony (Elena) DeYoung, Bryce (Kelsey) DeYoung, Hillary (Alex) Hansen, Danielle (Travis) Tennant, Marie (Baki) Sanogo, Matthew DeYoung, Jessica (Andy) Tiefenbach, Grace (Mike) Fennema, Ben Bootsma, and Meeka Bootsma; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded by her brother, Bernard DeHaas and sisters, Josephine DeHaas, Angeline Deur, and Alta Dragt. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, January 30, 2017, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Fremont with Rev. Drew Sweetman officiating. There will be visitation prior to the service from 10 – 11 AM at the Church with interment in Maple Grove Cemetery. For a more lasting memorial, friends are asked to consider the American Decency Association. Friends may share memories and condolences online at www.crandellfh.com.
