Almer Maat, 82 of Fremont, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Health Services in Fremont. Almer was born on September 13, 1929 in Fremont to Albert and Fannie (Weiden) Maat. Almer married Shirley DeLong on February 19, 1955 in Hesperia and has been a lifelong resident of the Fremont area where he had been a production worker at the Brunswick Corporation in Muskegon for 35 years until his retirement. Almer served in the United States Army and was discharged as a Private First Class prior to the Korean War and later joined the United States Air Force where he served as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean War. Almer was a member of the Lake Community Bible Church in Baldwin and had enjoyed auctions, gardening, construction projects, spending time at the family cottage on Big Star Lake, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Almer is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley of Fremont; his children, Laurel Maat of Grand Rapids; Mary (Jeff) Hale of Austin, Texas; Jayne Baughan of Byron Center; Everett Maat of Fremont; James (Annette) Maat of Big Rapids; Karl Maat of San Jose, California; his grandchildren, Jason Frantz, Derek Frantz, Christopher Baughan, Andy Maat, Steve Maat, Robby Hale, Megan Maat; his sister, Burnetta Weaver of Fremont. Almer was preceded in death by his sister, Gertrude Dykman and by his brothers, John and Ed Maat. VISITATION : Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 5-8pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. FUNERAL SERVICES : Monday, January 30, 2012 at 2:30pm at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. INTERMENT : East Hesperia Cemetery.
