Obituary

Pugno, Arlene Arlene Elizabeth Nettleton McMillan Pugno, age 93, died on October 22, 2003 with her family around her. She was born October 11, 1910 in St. Clair , Michigan . A girl from a poor inner city Irish-Scottish family, she grew up with love from an extended family and had many a story of living in flats, sleeping in hallways and rat infested tenements. Arlene remembers wooden sidewalks and the old swinging saloon doors of Corktown in Detroit . As a young woman, she rode the streetcar to the end of the line which went all the way out to Eight Mile road in Detroit . Beyond that was country. As a girl, she remembers the parade, when the doughboys came home from World War I. Both ice and milk were delivered by cart and horse. As a young adult, she loved to Charleston and could she dance! She graduated from Southwestern High School in Detroit , despite her own dream, she was unable to attend college. During the Depression, Arlene worked as an executive secretary for Prudential and was the only one who kept work, so she supported her family. Despite her own dream, she was unable to attend college, however she valued. Arlene McMillan married Alfred Pugno in 1934. As a newly married couple, they moved to Grant, where Pug got his first coaching job at Grant High School . Al Jr. was born there and the family then moved to Fremont . Diane was born in 1937. The growing Pugno family moved to a home on Sheridan street and Pug taught and coached at Fremont High School . In 1943, Sharene was born and then Linda in 1945. Arlene was busy with family, church and community. After they moved to 21 North Decker street , Johnny was born in 1951. That completed the family and Pug was now a businessman in Fremont , selling insurance. Arlene was involved as a volunteer when the Fremont Foundation was starting out and she helped to run a thrift center in the basement helping the needy of Newaygo County . She never forgot her humble beginnings. Arlene was an officer with the Girl Scout Council and active in the First Congregational Church. She was active in many community endeavors and was always an ardent supporter of the library. We can attest to her extraordinary skills as the maker of original and wonderful Halloween costumes, as we won lots of prizes at the Fremont Halloween parades. Her love for dolls was life long mainly because she was too poor to have her own beautiful doll as a child. She collected them for years and handmade their gowns, hats, etc. Arlene was a marvelous cook-known for her spaghetti and meatballs. Pugs sister Norma taught her all of the Italian family recipes. Arlenes lifelong value for education crossed several generations, as all of her children and grandchildren have graduated from college. She was proud of that fact. The family cottage at Sylvan (Kids Cove) was the center of the family fun and love. There, she enjoyed many diamond days. Grandchildren and great grandchildren now treasure the time they have there. Lots of folks tell us that Arlene was one of the finest ladies they knew. We certainly agree. Friends were vital to her life. Many of her old friends are gone, although a few like Lorraine , Kathryn, and Ilah remain. Her new younger friends have been steadfast in their support and love, Carol, Bernadine, Ruth and Janie. So much love and joy from them to her. We, her family, have treasured this wonderful mother and thank God she was our Mom. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Pugno and her granddaughter, Wendy Moorhead. She is survived by her only sibling, Florence Henry of Gregory, Michigan, her five children; Al Pugno, Jr. of Kentwood, Michigan, Diane (Dave) White of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Sharene (John) Menson of Missoula, Montana, Linda (Tim) Snyder of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania and John (Ailene) Pugno of Newaygo, Michigan, two nephews, ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her honor to the Arlene and Alfred Pugno Fremont High School Scholarship Fund C/ O Fremont Area Community Foundation or the Fremont Library. Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 25, 2003 from the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fremont with Rev. Ray Dekker presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont . Arrangements by Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. www.crandellfh.com
