Barbara J. Portz, age 56 of Scottsville, Kentucky, formerly of Hardy Dam, passed away Sunday, December 12, 2004 at her daughters home in Newaygo. Barbara was born on February 04, 1948 in Lakeview, Michigan to Edgar Alden and Sadie Elizabeth (Aishe) Westgate and attended school at Morley Stanwood and graduated from Lakeview High School. Barbara later met and married David Portz on March 29, 1969 at the Bills Lake Bible Church. She had been employed by the General Motors Company where she worked at the Alpine Manufacturing Plant and later transferred to the Bowling Green, Kentucky Plant until her retirement after 28 years of service. She enjoyed music and played the guitar, harmonica, piano and singing. She spent time drawing architectual home plans, enjoyed traveling, and spending time with her daughters and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, David; her daughters, Penny (Alec) Chesley of Newaygo; Deanna (Nick) Beery of Newaygo; her grandchildren, Zander N. Beery; Cole A. Chesley, Kylee M. Chesley, and Katy L. Chesley; her mother, Sadie Westgate of Newaygo; brothers and sisters, B.A. (Neva) Westgate of Muskegon; Richard (Peggy) Westgate of Allegan; Donald (Sue) Westgate of Brooklyn, Michigan; Rodney Westgate of Newaygo; Ray (Carolyn) Westgate of Newaygo; Edna (Robert) Wood of Newaygo; Robert (Linda) Westgate of Newaygo; Thomas (Sandy) Westgate of Newaygo; Lois (Leon) Staples of Newaygo; Ida Krueger of Newaygo. She was preceded in death by her father, Edgar Westgate; brother Arthur Westgate; her sisters, Gladys Boucher; Evelyn Howe; Wilma Jean Howe; Marion Dosch. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 from the Crandell Funeral Home White Cloud Chapel with Priest Teri Portz presiding with interment in the Big Prairie Everett Township Cemetery.
