Obituary

Barbara Ann Sherwood, age 75, of Newaygo, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at Spectrum Health Services - Blodgett Campus in Grand Rapids. Barbara was born on December 5, 1939, in Bridgeton to Howard and Dorothy (Swanson) Young. As a youngster, Barbara attended the one room Bridgeton School with her brothers. Childhood days she picked pickles, beans, cherries and asparagus, and weeded onions, for extra income for the family. After they moved to Fremont in 1952, she attended Fremont Public Schools. In her teen years she sold popcorn and movie tickets at the Oz Theater in Fremont. She graduated in 1958. After graduation, Barbara became a switchboard operator for Michigan Bell Telephone Company. It was during that time that she met, through a blind date, Leonard Sherwood, a Michigan Bell telephone installer. The two were married in Stuttgart, Germany, on December 18, 1959, where Leonard was stationed in the Army. When the couple returned to the States, they bought property in Newaygo to build their house and family. Barbara was an individual who always kept her hands busy. While a mother and homemaker, she picked apples several seasons for Purcell Orchards. Later she was employed by the First State Bank of Newaygo (Independent Bank West Michigan), eventually earning the title of assistant branch manager. Barbara was a strong, determined person who never complained about a difficulty. She was a devoted mother and wife who gave unconditional love to all. She enjoyed sewing clothes and became quite famed for the Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls she created. She was a great cook and baker; her dill pickles and cinnamon rolls were everyones delight. The door was always open and the coffee always hot at the house. She loved spending time with family and friends. She was a good listener. Her grandsons were her delight. Barbara touched hearts wherever she went. She will be missed by all that knew her. She is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Leonard; Daughters, Jackie Lynn (George) Parkhurst of West Bloomfield and Kelly Ann (Mark) Tinkham of Newaygo; Grandsons, Ryan (Lisa Nunez) Bridgewater, Christopher Parkhurst, Justin Tinkham, and Jared Tinkham; Brothers, Vern (Patty) Young of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and Richard (Kathy) Young of Fremont; and many nieces and nephews. An open house will be held from 2:00 4:00 PM on Saturday, August 22, at the Fremont Wesleyan Church. Friends are encouraged to come and visit and share memories with the family.
