Benjamin Jerome Sovinski, age 98, of Fremont, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family and has started his journey to be with his almighty Father in Heaven. Benjamin was born on February 20th, 1925, in Plymouth, Pennsylvania to Benjamin and Mary Sovinski. He grew up in the coal mining country of Pennsylvania. His family moved to New York City where he attended the New York High School of Commerce where he graduated in 1942.
During this time, the second World War was still on going and tensions were high from the attack on Pearl Harbor. At 18, Benjamin was drafted into service into the US Army Air Corps where he served as a crewmen engineer/navigator on B-24 bomber aircrafts. During this time, he met the love of his life, Marie Louise Cordts where they had a brief courtship and fell madly in love. He traveled from New York to Grand Rapids to meet Marie's family and 6 months later, on June 1st, 1946, the two were married in White Cloud, Michigan.
Ben and Marie spent their first year of marriage living in New York City where Ben attended art school. When Marie became pregnant with their first-born son, the two decided that they preferred to raise their children outside of the city and moved back to Fremont where they established the Hi-Lites printing business. Here, Ben was able to put his artistic talent to work, that would provide beneficial marketing service to the community. He was a strong advocate for the development and growth of businesses in Fremont and Newaygo County surrounding areas, where he established many lifelong friends within the local community. He and Marie grew their family and business with a strong faith, endless amounts of love, integrity and remarkable work ethic. He and his wife were long time parishioners of the All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont. He was an avid sportsman that loved fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and camping and took his family on many adventures to create lifelong memories. In his later years, he put the same heart into gardening and landscaping his home where his children and grandchildren could enjoy the fruits of his never-ending labors. He would love visiting for family games nights and his eyes would light up, with a big smile to follow as soon as one of his children or grandchildren walked through the door.
Benjamin is survived by his loving wife of 77 years, Marie L. Sovinski and their children: Michael (Kathy) Sovinski, Tony Sovinski, Daniel (Cindy) Sovinski, Jon (Julie A.) Sovinski, Mary Jane (Mike) Sullivan, Joe Sovinski, and Julie M. Sovinski and his extended family in Thailand Charin Hansuebsai and family, along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Benjamin is preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary and Benjamin Sovinski, his daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Tom Kowalski, and his grandson Steven Sullivan. His infinite love will be missed by his family and friends, but the memories will fill us with joy for the rest of our lives.
