Benjamin E. Nottingham, age 89 of Hesperia, formerly of Nunica, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Benjamin was born on January 26, 1926 in Wyandotte, Michigan to Fay and Rosa (Kalbfleisch) Nottingham and later married Jacqueline Jackie A. Paquette on October 8, 1955 in Wyandotte, Michigan. Jackie preceded him in death on March 18, 2011. Benjamin started working as a writer at the Livonian newspaper in 1953 and later became the editor of the South Lyon Herald; worked as a reporter/photographer for the Benton Harbor News-Palladium and in 1965 started as a feature writer for the Grand Rapids Press outdoor section until he became the outdoor editor in 1973 until his retirement in 1981. After retirement from writing, Ben and Jackie owned and operated the Half Moon Saloon in Dalton for several years. Ben enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming, riding his motorcycle in the warmer months, enjoyed vegetable gardening, was a member of the Society For Preservation and Encouragement Of Barbershop Quartet Singing, Muskegon Shoreline Chorus. Benjamin was a veteran of World War II where he served in the United States Army. Benjamin is survived by his children, Paul Nottingham of Coopersville; Nancy (Leonard) Brauer of Hesperia; Marsha (Eric White) Nottingham of Howell, Michigan; Laura (Craig) Weekley of Lake Villa, Illinois; Neil Nottingham of South Haven; Robin (Bill) Sidebotham of Dorr, Michigan; Matthew Nottingham of Norton, Massachusetts; his grandchildren, Katie, Michael, Rick, Chris, Brad, Angie, Casey, Payton, Cooper, Ruby, Deacon, Jackie, Danielle; 5 great grandchildren, Kayleigh, Zachary, Serenity, Aiden, and Owen; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Edward Friend; sisters, Eileen Ramsey, Roberta Mallory and Martina Harrison. VISITATION : Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 3-6 pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel 7193 W 48th Street. MEMORIAL SERVICES : Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 2 pm at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. INTERMENT : Abson Cemetery in Walkerville. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : Muskegon Humane Society.
