Betty was a wonderful person, a good friend of many, and a faithful church worker. One of our sons told us, many years ago, that Betty was the best Sunday School teacher he ever had. I have known the Howarth family ever since coming to Michigan in 1923. In fact, my father rented one of George's buildings. Dad had a cream station and a produce business in that building. There are so many memories of the Howarths, including Betty when she came into your family. Arnold and Mildred Wheeler Woodring Posted 8/20/07 If you go to the visitation or funeral service and talk to any of the family, would you please give them my condolences. Also, please let them know I have many fond memories of both "Grandpa" and Mrs. Howarth from the church. I'd like them to know that I really wish I could make it there. I remember "Grandpa" Howarth well. He would also have a peppermint or candy in his suit pocket for the kids!! He was so very loving and enjoyed the kids of the church. As a kid, I always looked forward to going to church partly because you could usually depend on seeing "Grandpa" and getting his friendly smile, hug, and a piece of mint/candy. I would intentionally look for him after service. He was like a modern day Jesus in that he always welcomed the children of the congregation and enjoyed their presence, stories, etc. Ever since "Grandpa" Howarth's death, I would look for Mrs. Howarth whenever I attended church. I would make an effort to see her and wish her well. Mrs. Howarth was also so inviting, friendly, cheerful and just a wonderful lady! I will truly miss seeing her in church. Love, Debbie Woodring DeVisser Truskoski Posted 8/20/07 For Mrs. Howarth's family: Shirley and I are so sorry about the sudden loss of someone so special. She was such a wonderful person and a faithful church worker. We too, as Debbie mentioned, always looked for her in church each and every Sunday. One of our sons told us, many years ago, that she was his favorite Sunday School teacher. He put her to the test many times with his probing questions in class according to one of our former pastors. She remembered him at the time of his unexpected death several years ago. Mrs. Howarth has been a long time family friend. Shirley and Jerry Woodring Posted 8/20/07 Pauline and Julie, My sympathies are with your families. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jeanene Hollowell Bosse Posted 8/21/07 Pauline and Julie, I am sorry about the passing of your Mom and Grandmother. Mothers and Grandmothers are special people in our lives and our lives are richer for having them. They are walking history books and much more fun to learn from. My prayers and thoughts are with you all. Jeanene Hollowell Bosse Posted 8/21/07 Pauline, Our sincere condolences in the passing of your venerated mother, Betty. How wonderful to have had her in your life for this length of time. Dick and Judy Ramm Posted 8/21/07 Betty was my neighbor across the street for about 13 years. She came to my 40th birthday and brought me cherry jam, which I had never had. We would stop to chat when taking out the garbage, raking leaves, or whatever took us both outside at the same time. She wasn't one to quit working! We would also enjoy chatting when we ran into each other at the store or restaurant. She would joke that she needed to keep her binoculars handy for when I was working on my my house. Betty was a lovely lady. Very open and accepting with a good sense of humor. I am going to miss seeing her living room light on in the evening and our chats. Pauline, you are as pleasant as she said you were. Joyce Dykstra Posted 8/23/2007 Dear Pauline, Kay, Greg and Julie, Time passes and we expect to lose loved ones, however the hurt and sadness is not lessened. On behalf of the STRATTON family, please accept our condolences. We have such fond memories of Grandpa George and Betty. Playing in the little house with Kay reading uncles comic books and I especially recall sledding down what seemed like a huge hill by their house in the winter. One day one of Oostings horses that were being boarded in the barn got loose and we ran for home scared to death and our dad made us go back for our sleds. Betty and Grandpa George were always there with treats and stories for all of us in the neighborhood. Ah, the good times. Our thoughts and prayers remain with you all. Love, Marie, Diana & Gordy, Judy & Jerry and families. Judy Nadeau-Zerr Posted 8/24/2007 So many good memories of "the Howarth sliding hill" on Oak street, each winter still remain! How wonderful to have had the Howarth as good neighbors when we grew up ! My thoughts and prayers are with you all in your loss. Hope Stratton Posted 8/28/2007 Dear Pauline and other family members: I was just "browsing", and discovered that Betty had died. What a fine spirited loyal life she had. I knew her when she was Betty Larsen. My memories of the relationship with Earl will remain forever. Please give my regards to Don and Harold. John Karnemaat ([email protected]) Posted 10/2/2007
