Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Brien Thomas VanSchoick, age 74, who left us peacefully on Sunday, September 15th, 2024. Brien was born on Wednesday, May 3rd, 1950, in Hanover, Michigan, and was a beloved resident of Holton, MI.

Brien is survived by his devoted wife, Judy VanSchoick, and his children, Julie (George) Murphy, Heather (Christopher) Overbeek, Andrew (Tracy) VanSchoick, and Wendy (Eric) Mansfield. His legacy extends through his cherished grandchildren: Jada Murphy, Emmalee Murphy, Sienna Murphy, Leila Overbeek, Livi Overbeek, Lanie Overbeek, Gavin VanSchoick, Bryson VanSchoick, Joseph Mansfield, and Jaxson Mansfield, all of whom affectionately called him "Bampa." He is also survived by his brother, Charles E. VanSchoick II, his sisters, Christine (Dan) Burger, Chloe Ann (Charles) Fisher, and numerous nieces and nephews. Brien leaves behind his dear friends Ronald and Betty Mousel. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. VanSchoick I, and his mother, Lorraine (Charter) VanSchoick.

Brien's formative years were spent in school at Hanover Elementary and Hanover Middle School before graduating from Kentwood High School. His professional journey was marked by his dedication as a Social Worker with the State of Michigan. Brien was also a proud veteran, serving six years in the Army National Guard, deeply loyal to his country. An avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast, Brien happily coached his children's sports teams, and he greatly enjoyed golfing and deer hunting. He also dedicated 35 years as a sports official inspiring his granddaughters to share his passion. Additionally, he found joy in playing blackjack at the casino and watching the Detroit Tigers, Lions, Pistons, Red Wings, and The Maize and Blue. Above all, Brien treasured his time spent with his children and grandchildren, whether watching their athletic events or spending quality time together, He gave of himself without hesitation whenever his kids or grandkids needed him. Brien's kind spirit, unwavering commitment to his family, and love for life will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A visitation will be held at Crandell Funeral Homes Inc in Fremont, MI on Sunday, September 22nd, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at Holton Lutheran Church in Holton, MI, on Monday, September 23rd, 2024, at 11:00 am with a visitation 30 minutes prior. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a more lasting donation to the Brien VanSchoick Volleyball Referee Memorial Scholarship at gofund.me/b48afd3e or can be directed to Harbor Hospice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Crandell Funeral Home in Fremont, MI.
