October 22, 1921 – May 4, 2016
Brownie Norkus, age 94 of Fremont, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont following a short illness. Brownie was born on October 22, 1921 in Hartshorne, Oklahoma to William and Rose (Bellevich) Norkus. The family moved from Oklahoma to Michigan prior to World War II, buying a farm outside of Fremont just south of Reeman near the corner of West 80th Street and Dickinson Road. Brownie met and married Helen Christensen on December 10, 1966 and Helen preceded him in death on April 15, 2011. As part of the Greatest Generation, Brownie proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II fighting in the Pacific Theater in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. Upon his return to civilian life, Brownie began a long career at Sealed Power (SPX) in Muskegon until his retirement. He was a member of the Holton American Legion, Post #397, Newaygo V.F.W. Post #4249 and Fremont Moose Lodge #1555. He was an avid sportsman, hunting and fishing for most of his life and a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions. Brownie is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and special friends. Brownie was preceded in death by his parents. William and Rose Norkus; his sister, Stella Norkus; his brothers and sisters-in-laws, Tony (Audrey) Norkus; Victor (Mary) Norkus; his nephew, Victor Butch Norkus Jr. and niece, Vicki Redfern Norkus. VISITATION : Sunday, May 8, 2016 from 2-4pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. SCRIPTURE SERVICES : Sunday at 3:30pm at the Crandell Funeral Home. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL AND VISITATION : Monday, May 9, 2016 from 10:00 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church (500 Iroquois Fremont MI 49412). INTERMENT : Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS : Please consider memorial contributions to the All Saints Catholic Church Building Fund.
