Bruce Karl
Havens
December 1, 1952 – April 5, 2026
Bruce Karl Havens, 73, of Fremont, formerly of Mt Pleasant, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on Sunday evening, April 5, 2026.
Bruce was born December 1, 1952, in Jackson, Michigan, to Vernon and Kathryn (Zuelch) Havens. After graduating from East Grand Rapids High School in 1971, he attended Michigan State University and graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor's Degree from the College of Social Science. Bruce later became a deputy with the Ingham County Sherriff's Department. While working as a deputy, he also trained and became one of the earliest paramedics.
Ever the hardworker, Bruce undertook the daunting task of becoming a lawyer. He received his Juris Doctorate in 1985 from Thomas M Cooley Law School. Bruce enjoyed arguing and being right, which, combined with his deep sense of justice, served him well as an attorney. He was the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Court judge in the 1990s, after which he settled into his favorite type of law to practice — bankruptcy. Bruce was truly proud to help his clients get a fresh start. He also became a well known polygraph examiner in the state of Michigan.
On June 17, 2000, Bruce and Lynda (Bergquist) were married. Throughout their marriage, they loved going to concerts, playing blackjack, and laughing together on the porch on summer evenings. Bruce's zest for life was evident in all things he did and loved, whether it was fishing, collecting Chevrolet Camaros, spending time with his dogs, taking photographs, or watching Michigan State basketball. One of his greatest joys was spending time at his property in Remus. It didn't matter if he was fishing, clearing trails, feeding the geese, planting or cutting down trees, or sitting on the back deck just watching the lake; he loved it all. He was a caring, hardworking, vibrant man and a loving, devoted husband and father. He is, and will continue to be, deeply missed.
Bruce is survived by: his wife Lynda; children, Steven (Laura) Havens, Ryan Havens, Christopher Havens, Trevor (LJ) Grabill, TJ (Randy) Sadir, and Zak (Taylor) Sadir; grandchildren, Ashley (Wallan) Santos, Rafe Hembree, and Shaelynn Havens; and father-in-law, Al Bergquist.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Kathryn (Zuelch) Havens; and mother-in-law, Theresia Bergquist.
Cremation will take place and a private celebration of life will take place in the summer of 2026.
