Obituary

Captain Burton "Burt" L. Cooper (ret), age 67 of Fremont, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday morning, June 19, 2022 at his home. Burt was born on November 26, 1954 in Grant to Wayne and Phyllis (Stewart) Cooper. Burt joined the United States Army where he served until his honorable discharge as Specialist 4th Class and later joined the United States Navy and retired at the rank of Captain on May 1, 2010. While serving in the U.S. Navy, Burt served in the Seabee's, had been stationed on the USS Eisenhower and worked in the communication and internet services for the Navy and had also served as a Search and Rescue Mission Pilot, CAP and had received the Meritorious Service Medal. He also served on the Civil Air Patrol and loved to fly airplanes. Burt was currently serving as a Newaygo County Commissioner District 1, where he was serving as Chairperson of the Public Safety & Judicial Committee and served on the Veterans Affairs Committee. Burt also served on the Marine Patrol for the Newaygo County Sheriff's Department and served as a Reserve Police Officer with the City of Fremont and had been an Emergency Medical Technician – Specialist. Burt graduated from Ravenna High School and later received his MBA from Grand Valley State University. He had also worked at Nestle Corporation as a project management professional until his retirement in 2015. Burt married Amber (Conley) Bennitt on September 21, 2013 in Ludington and enjoyed hunting, fishing, being in the Michigan outdoors and was a "dad he didn't have to be" and had a fatherly heart to many. He was a devoted Christian and was a member of the Resonate Church in Newaygo. Burt is survived by his wife, Amber Cooper; his children, Avonlea Bennitt-Cooper of Fremont; Roy Bennitt-Cooper of Fremont; Lee Cooper; Jeff Cooper; stepchildren, Jesse Lincoln, Zoe Lincoln, and Val Campbell; granddaughter, Madison Cooper and several other grandchildren; his parents, Wayne and Phyllis Cooper of Muskegon; his brother, Martin (Brea) Cooper of Ravenna; his mother and father-in-law, Hugh and Nancy Conley of Hesperia; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Burt was preceded in death by his son, Greg Cooper; and his brother Thomas Cooper. VISITATION : Thursday, June 23, 2022 from 10-12pm at the Resonate Church in Newaygo. FUNERAL SERVICES : Thursday, June 23, 2022 at 12pm at the Resonate Church in Newaygo. MILITARY HONORS following the funeral services at the church under the auspices of the U.S. Navy.
