Obituary

In the early morning hours of October 15, 2026, at Newaygo Medical Care Facility, Carl Albert Homsher was quietly called to his heavenly home surrounded by loving family.

Carl was born March 3, 1949, in Flint, MI to Don P. Homsher and S. JoAnn (Davidson) Homsher. His family lived a short time in Flint before moving to Flushing where he graduated in 1967. Ballard Church of Christ in Sparta, MI was where Carl would meet the love of his life, Laurene K. (Lautzenheiser). They married in June 1982 and purchased their first home on Little Ford Lake east of Fremont where Carl ice fished every winter for pike with his father-in-law. The couple had two daughters: Andrea Lyn and Caryn Nicole. When their daughters were ages five and three, the family moved to a newer home on Fremont Lake channel.

Carl’s childhood jobs included working as a paperboy, removing thorns from roses, and delivering flowers for his parents’ florist business. He served as manager of the Flushing High School junior varsity and varsity football teams, where, during his senior year, he was honored for demonstrating the best team spirit and sportsmanship throughout his four years at the school. That began his life-long devotion and support of the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Redwings, and, most of all, the University of Michigan football and basketball teams.

Putting himself through school attending night classes earned Carl a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting & Business Management from U of M-Flint. His first corporate job was in the Accounting Department at the Flint GM Assembly Plant. He made corporate accounting his life-time work. While working at GM Carl educated himself to recognize the make, model, and year of every car that he approached by looking at the grill rather than the hood emblem. Throughout his life, he only drove GM vehicles, except for his first (and favorite) car, a 1959 green Triumph convertible. In later years, Carl enjoyed his 1992 Maui Blue Buick Regal Sport sedan.

Motorcycles were an important part of Carl’s life. He owned a 400 cc Yamaha, a 1977 Harley Davidson Sportster, and his pride, a 2002 Harley Davidson Road King. He was a road captain for Sandy’s Harley Davidson Tuesday rides for many years. He made certain that he always took a different route home than the one to the original destination. Both of his daughters share his interest of bikes and cars and enjoy taking a “new way home” on their travels just like their daddy.

The family enjoyed their 17-foot Fish-N-Ski boat where Carl took the family tubing on Fremont Lake, often ending at Lakeside Swirl Ice Cream Shop, a favorite destination for his daughters. He also took the family tubing on Silver Lake in Mears, MI and Otsego Lake in Gaylord, MI. Leisurely family boat rides at dusk were also a beloved pastime.

Favorite memories were made at the family cottage on Otsego Lake. Growing up, Carl cherished his family’s time at the cottage and continued visiting into his married years. He learned, and later taught his daughters, to swim and drive a boat, and is also where Carl found his most inner peace.

He became a grill master perfecting his barbeque chicken, ribs, and rotisserie smoked hams. In his retirement years, he became an expert chili master, winning six top honors at Sandy’s H-D Thanksgiving Weekend Chili Cook-off. He looked forward every year to deer camp week in November as the designated cook. Carl also enjoyed annual weekend fishing tournaments in the spring.

Carl was an avid player of gin rummy, euchre, pedro, and pinochle. He and Laurene hosted numerous card and New Year’s Eve parties over their 44-year marriage. Strategies for winning card games were happily shared with both of their daughters. In addition to teaching his girls the ins and outs of card games, it was important to Carl as a father to also instruct them in how to relax and enjoy classic music (Beatles, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Jim Croce); to play basketball, ride bicycles, and safely drive. As a passionate lifelong reader, it was imperative to Carl that his daughters and grandchildren learn the importance of reading: books, newspapers, magazines, and e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g at historical museums. Like with good music, he wanted his family to develop a healthy respect and passion for classic and unique literature. Whenever the grandchildren visited, Carl looked forward to reading an old favorite with them curled in his lap.

In his youth, Carl learned life lessons as a Boy Scout. As an adult he enjoyed being a 30+ year member of Fremont Lions Club where he held offices of Secretary and President. He faithfully attended Fremont United Methodist Church for nearly 40 years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Laurene K. (Lautzenheiser) Homsher; daughters Andrea L. (Michael) Homsher-Cox of Montague, MI and Dr. Caryn N. (Marcus) Ritosa of Lakewood, CO; six grandchildren: Kendryk Carl Michael Cox (11) of Montague; Rosalie Thérèse (11), Thomas Ambrose (8), Dominic Augustine (6), Leo Sebastian (3), and James Vincent (1) Ritosa of Lakewood, CO; sisters Stephanie (Larry) Welte of Lincoln City, OR and Sara (Mark) Schneider of Austin, TX; one nephew, three nieces and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Don Phillips Homsher of Okeechobee, FL; his mother S. JoAnn (Davidson) Homsher of Austin, TX; his father- and mother-in-law Kenneth E. Lautzenheiser and Rowena J. (McAlvey) Lautzenheiser of Jerome, MI; and grandsons Joss Kai of Montague, MI and Lucas Emmanuel of Lakewood, CO.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Newaygo Medical Care Facility and Hospice of Michigan volunteers for their kindness, support and comfort.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel(7193 W. 48th Street, Fremont, MI 49412) from 11:30 am-1 pm with funeral service at 1 pm. A luncheon will follow at Stone Lodge in Fremont (4465 W. 48 h Street, Fremont, MI 49412). (Access to Stone Lodge parking is located in the lot adjacent to Newaygo Medical Care Facility.)

Interment will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Muskegon, MI at a future date.

Per Carl’s request, memorial gifts may be given to Hospice of Michigan or the Lions (Clubs) of Michigan Foundation.
