Carmen Joyce Castaneda, age 83 of Comstock Park, formerly of Newaygo, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at the Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. Carmen was born on March 8, 1934 in Grand Rapids to George Leon and Marian Louise (Stapleton) Oom and later attended Moody Bible Institute. Carmen joined the United States Air Force in 1957 until her honorable discharge. Carmen worked as an administrative assistant at the Grant Public Schools from 1981 until her retirement at the age of 76. Carmen married Jesus Castaneda on September 28, 1996 at the Big Prairie Community Church in Newaygo and had been a resident of the Newaygo area for 25 years before moving to Comstock Park in 2013 and attended the Grand Rapids Faith Fellowship Church in Comstock Park. Carmen was an avid reader, enjoyed her cats and all animals, enjoyed feeding and watching the birds, Wednesday night fish dinners, gaming, traveling, and would not miss her Friday Date Nite at the movies with Jesus for 21 years. Carmen especially enjoyed her extended family and treasured the time she spent with her daughters.

Carmen is survived by her husband, Jesus of Comstock Park; her daughters, Christi (Jason) Clark of Nunica; Patti (Brian) Hansen of Comstock Park; her step children, James (Wendi) Lanham of Maryland; Sherry (John) Acquaviva of Maryland; several step grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Carmen was preceded in death by her sister, Patti Oom and her brothers, Tommy Oom, David Oom, Donald Oom.

FUNERAL SERVICES : Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 11:00am at the Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel with MILITARY HONORS under the auspices of the Newaygo VFW and the United States Air Force Honor Guard. INTERMENT : Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 2:00pm at the Fairplains Cemetery 2056 Diamond Ave NE Grand Rapids MI 49505.
