August 7, 1932 – August 22, 2014
Charles H. Durham, age 82 of Fremont, passed away Friday, August 22, 2014 at the Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids following a short illness. Charles was born on August 7, 1932 in Muskegon to Charles E. and Sarah Catherine (Bragg) Durham. At the age of 5, Charles father passed away and Sarah later married Lester Dumaw Sr. who became his father. When Charles turned 16 he lied about his age and joined the United States Air Force in December 1948 where he served for 21 years until his discharge in January 1969 as Master Sergeant. Charles served the majority of his military time with the 30th Com Squadron with the Strategic Air Command in England, Hawaii and Nebraska during the Korean and Vietnam War. While stationed in Nebraska, Charles met and married Dorothy Camerlinck on January 8, 1951 in Papillion, Nebraska. After his discharge from the Air Force, Charles moved back to the Fremont area in 1968 where he started work at General Telephone Company in Holton and later moved to Lawton, Oklahoma where he was the warehouse manager for Wolverton Furniture until his final retirement and he and Dorothy moved back to Fremont in 1986. Charles enjoyed deer hunting, was an avid Fremont Football fan, had been an EMT, former Boy Scout Leader, loved his animals and enjoyed family genealogy. Charles greatest love however was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Charles is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy of Fremont; his children, Chuck (Sally) Durham of Fremont; Marikay (Michael) Abbott of Fremont; Bryan (Janet) Durham of Glenburn, North Dakota; Rikki (Steve) Meade of Cache, Oklahoma; Sheila (Don) West of Roanoke, West Virginia; Lee (Daina) Durham of Cleveland, Georgia; Bill (Ginger) Durham of Fremont; Gayle (Bob) Scarfone of Faxon, Oklahoma; Glenn (Kit) Durham of Fremont; 28 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Carol (Herb) Postema of Fremont; Vivian Netzler of Muskegon; Lester Dumaw of Muskegon; Fran Dumaw of Muskegon; Elisa (Dave) Harris of Hesperia; numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Durham. VISITATION : Monday, August 25, 2014 from 4-7pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel and Tuesday from 10-11 at the church. SCRIPTURE SERVICES: Monday at 7pm at the funeral home. MASS OF RESSURECTION : Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 11am at All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont. INTERMENT : Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital.
