Charles William Hawkey, age 86 of Fremont, passed away Monday at the Gerber Memorial Health Services in Fremont. He was born on Dec. 28, 1913 in Fremont to Fred V. and Frances (Smith) Hawkey and married Ruth Walle on Oct. 24, 1942 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. He has been a lifelong resident of Fremont where he was an insurance adjuster for the White Agency for 42 years until his retirement in 1978. He was a U.S. Army Veteran where he served in Europe. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ; life member of Pilgrim Lodge where he was Mason of the Year in 1993; past president of the Fremont Fish & Game Club; had been a boy scout leader for many years and was a 50 year member of the Fremont V.F.W. Laurels Post #6898. He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Fremont; daughter, Karen Gilbert of Marshall; grandchildren; Amy Jane (Michael) Mulkey & Christian Charles Gilbert; son, Fred Hawkey (Denise MacDonald and children; Demetry and Demont MacDonald) of Newaygo; sister, Mary E. "Sally" Hawkey of Marshall. Funeral services were held on Thursday. 1:00 p.m. from the church with interment in Maple Grove Cemetery. For a more lasting memorial, friends and family may consider the Alzheimers Association.
