Harnden, Clare R. Clare R. Harnden, age 83 of Fremont, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2004 following a long illness complicated by Alzheimers disease, at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Clare was born on June 4, 1921 in Allegan County to Rich A. and Gertrude Belle (Durand) Harnden and married Pearl M. Brisbin on August 14, 1949 at the Casnovia Methodist Church. He moved to Fremont in 1955 and had been a field representative for Gerber Products Company for 25 years until his retirement. Clare was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church and was an avid sports fan supporting the Fremont Packers to his fullest touching and mentoring many youth; was a former Fremont Lions Club member; had served as Treasurer and Executive Secretary of the National Junior Horticultural Association; member of the Newaygo County Fair Association; loved the Michigan outdoors where he hunted, fished, farmed, gardened. He also greatly enjoyed traveling the world. He was a veteran of World War II where he proudly served his nation in United States Army Air Corps and was a member of the 100th Bomb Group Association. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pearl of Fremont; his daughter, Shelley (Craig) Saylor of Holland; grandchildren, Nicole (Jason) Jipping of Holland; Travis Saylor of Holland; great grandchildren, Madison and Grace; 2 brothers, Lewis Harnden of Hickory Corners, MI; Raymond (Beverly) Harnden of Allegan; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Bernice Crafts and Mildred Valitchka. Funeral services were held on Friday, September 24, 2004 at the Fremont United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Wood presiding. Friends may consider the Fremont Area Community Foundation for either the Fremont United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or the Fremont High School Athletic Fund for memorial contributions in memory of Clare.
