Clifford J. Nordin, age 62 of Hesperia, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at the Spectrum Health Blodgett Campus in Grand Rapids following a lingering illness. Cliff was born on June 4, 1946 in Superior, Wisconsin, the son of Nicanor L. and Marjorie (Gould) Nordin Sr. and graduated from Brown City High School in 1964. After graduation, Cliff joined the United States Marine Corp where he served as a Corporal and received 2 Purple Hearts during the Vietnam Era until his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1966. Cliff attended and graduated from Ferris State University in 1971 with a Bachelors Degree in Biology and later received his Masters Degree in Field Biology from Central Michigan University. He entered his lifelong career in education at the Hesperia Community Schools in 1971 and served in various positions including science teacher at the Hesperia Middle School and Hesperia High School and later became Principal at the Hesperia Middle school and retired as Hesperia High School Principal in 1996. Cliff was active in sports during his time at the Hesperia High School where he served as the coach of the football team, track team, and girls volleyball team. Cliff had also served as Scoutmaster for Troop #1133 in Hesperia. Cliff met and later married Elizabeth Martus on August 30, 1968 at St. Marys Catholic Church of Burnside, Michigan and together they raised their family and have been residents of Hesperia for the past 40 years. After retirement, Cliff enjoyed fishing, reading, was an avid Detroit Lions fan, and enjoyed cooking where he was known for his bread making abilities. Cliff held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with all of them. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Elizabeth of Hesperia; his children and grandchildren, Alex (Isabel) Nordin and their daughter, Emma of San Antonio, Texas; Andy (Diane) Nordin and their children, Walter, Edward, and Anna of Isanti, Minnesota; Rene (Jos) Gutirrez and their children, Jos and Elizabeth of Lansing, Michigan; Stephanie Nordin of Hesperia; his mother, Marjorie Nordin of Brown City, Michigan; his brothers, Nicanor Nordin Jr. of Newaygo; Gregory (Betty) Nordin of Brown City, Michigan; Curt (Lynn) Nordin of Port Huron, Michigan; his sister, Patricia (Norm) Edwards of Brown City, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his father, Nicanor L. Nordin Sr. VISITATION : Friday, August 29, 2008 from 4-8pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICES : Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 2pm at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. INTERMENT : St. Marys Catholic Cemetery of Burnside, Michigan. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS : please make donations to the Hesperia Community Schools for the construction of a pole vault pit.
