Darmon Rodney Schoonmaker Sr. (Scooby), age 66, of White Cloud and Grand Rapids, Michigan, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Grand Rapids to Nancy (Heald) and Eko Schoonmaker, and Billy Wiebenga. Growing up, Darmon spent most of his childhood fishing on the Manistee River near the CC Bridge. Before his dad could even stop the car, Darmon would have his fishing poles ready, opening the car door and running out to the river. He'd hunt for snapping turtles and proudly bring them home to mom and dad to make turtle soup. He loved to play softball as a child and on leagues as an adult. He got his first practice bow and arrow at the age of 12 and fell in love with deer hunting as an adolescent, eventually opening Ma and Pa's Deer Processing in White Cloud, Michigan with his wife, Sherrie. He loved to cook and loved to challenge anyone to a cook off. He engaged people around him with positive energy and was always up for a bet - arm wrestling, poker, football, who could catch the biggest fish or shoot the biggest buck. He had a natural way of bringing out the best in people. He loved working with youth and was an icon in the Grand Rapids Community. He prided himself as head of Neighborhood Watch keeping the Black Hills on the west side of Grand Rapids, a welcoming community for all. He opened his home and heart to everyone in the community from all walks of life. His greatest gift was his ability to care for other people without judgment. If you needed anything at any time, Darmon was there. He called and checked in with all of his friends and family regularly and kept close knit connections with grace and humility. He was a magnetic joy to be around. His stories of hustling and money making were endless, his street smarts were second to none. He was admired by all who were lucky enough to know him, and he had a way of making you feel like the most important person in the world. We will miss his regular telephone calls just to tell us he loved us and was thinking of us. We will miss fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, motorcycling, horseback riding, camping, river floating, chatting, laughing, and connecting with this one-of-a-kind man. He was an exceptional human, a ray of light for so many, a loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend – he encompassed so many roles for so many people and continued to be a beacon and safe haven for so many with open arms, love, and laughter.
He is able to rest in peace with his fathers, Eko Schoonmaker and Billy Wiebenga, his siblings Brian Schoonmaker and Brenda Wiebenga, his first wife, Michelle Schoonmaker, and many other close family and friends who have passed from this life.
Left to carry on his unparalleled legacy are his dear wife, Sherrie (Barnaby) Schoonmaker, his adoring children Tabatha (Josh) Belbot, Thomas (Terina) Strickland, Kimberly (Mike) Strickland, Sabrina (Jeff) Carlson, Darmon Jr. (Ashley) Schoonmaker, Christian Young, Ashli (Tom) Schoonmaker, and Travis (Nikki) Schoonmaker, his doting mother, Nancy, loving siblings Vern, Sandy, Eko, Lisa, Tom, Bill, Kathy, Jeanine, and Nancy, 34 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless other family and friends, as well as a special friend, Rob Strayer. If you interacted with him, you carry on a piece of him.
