David E. Block Sr., age 79 of Newaygo, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at his home following a lingering illness. David was born on December 30, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to Nathan and Margaret (Purcell) (Block) Miller and has been a lifelong resident of the Newaygo area. David had been a diesel mechanic and truck driver for many years until his retirement. David married Geraldine Gerry Beebe on October 19, 1991 in Newaygo. David served in the United States Army during the Korean War where he received a Purple Heart. He was a life member of the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsmans Post #4249 where he was past commander, life member of the Cooties, member of the Purple Heart Association and White Cloud Eagles. David enjoyed his grandchildren, great grandchildren, traveling, fishing, bowling, dancing. He also enjoyed being in the Michigan outdoors and farming on the family homestead near Newaygo. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Gerry of Newaygo; children, Kansas (Gary) Rossett of Newaygo; Elizabeth Whitehead (special friend, Larry) of Cedar Springs; Toni Block of Alexandria, Virginia; stepchildren, Cherri (Tom) Vet of Sparta; Tim (Sandy) Collier of Atlanta, Georgia; Tina Swanstrom of Muskegon; Glen (Lynda) Jackomino of Muskegon; Audrey (Bob) Partak of Grand Rapids; Mark Young of White Cloud; James Whisenent of Howard City; grandchildren and their families, Jennifer (Darryl) Klok and children, Gage, Jacob, and Katherine; Timothy (Tami) Brander and children, Corey, David, Jay-Jay, Allen; Melonie (Kevin) Ressler and children, Elizabeth and Shawna; Gary Rossett III and son, Zane; Steven Rossett and son, Antonio; Zachary (Kate) Heth; Daphne (Jason) Fitzpatrick and children, Geordan, Colin, and Molly; Cassandra Heth; Nathan Norris; Spencer Norris; Abby Norris; step grandchildren and families, Brandon Vet; Justin Vet; Brandon (Cassandra) Swanstrom and children, Kayden and Amileigha; Amber (Manuel) Jemenez and daughter, Elicia; Kassie Jackomino; Kailee Jackomino; Roxy Partak; Veronia Partak; Charlotte Partak; Dominic Young; Dustin Young; Samantha Young; sister, Pat (Jim) Vandenberg of Newaygo; 2 nieces, Karla Vandenberg and Susie Koppenol and her son, Jay; his mother-in-law, Jean (Dale) Zufelt. He was preceded in death by his son, David Edward Block Jr.; his father, Nathan Block; his mother, Margaret (Purcell) Miller and step-father, Oliver Miller. VISITATION : Sunday, January 9, 2010 from 1-2pm at the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsmans Post #4249 Memorial Hall. MEMORIAL SERVICES : Sunday, January 9, 2010 at 2pm at the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsmans Post #4249 Memorial Hall wih Pastor Steve Vander West of the Grant Community Church and the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsman's Post #4249 Honor Guard presiding.
