Smalligan, David L. David L. Smalligan, age 68, of Newaygo, passed away Monday morning, March 29, 2004, at his home surrounded by his beloved family and friends. David was born on January 13, 1936, in Garfield Township to Peter and Esther (Vile) Smalligan and graduated from Fremont High School in 1955. He joined the Marine Corps Reserves where he served from 1955 until 1962. He married Marcia Osborn on July 27, 1956, in Muskegon and had worked at the S.D. Warren Paper Company in Muskegon until his retirement in 1992. David was a charter member of the Newaygo County Sheriffs Posse which he joined in 1977 and has been an extensive volunteer in this organization serving under Sheriffs Muma, Somers, Vos, Altena, and Mercer. He received several commendations from County, State and Federal law enforcement agencies for his work with the Posse and his assistance with law enforcement in Newaygo County. David also enjoyed hunting and shooting sports. He was a life member of the National Rifle Associatoin and had won several trophies in the state and local handgun shooting competitions as well as at Camp Perry in combat shooting. He is survived by loving wife of 48 years, Marcia; his son, Larry (Joan) Smalligan of Fremont; his daughter, Susan Smith and dear friend Larry Munger of Clare, Michigan; his mother, Esther Smalligan of Fremont; his grandchildren, Curt and Christa Smalligan and Christopher and Alicha Walker; his great granddaughter, Ashten; his brother, Paul (Mary) Smalligan of Alamo, California; sister, Mary Watson of Phoenix, Arizona; nieces, Jenny, Katy, and Laura Smalligan of California; nephew, Robert Fry of Phoenix, Arizona; cousins, Margie Hallada of Fremont; Jim (Maryann) Vile of Newaygo; Tom (Janet) Vile of Newaygo; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Osborn of Muskegon and Joyce Osborn of Utah; many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter Smalligan on July 25, 1996. Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 1, 2004 from the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel with interment in the Newaygo Cemetery.
