Delbert "Tom" Thomas Leiter, a beloved resident of Fremont, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, June 6th, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on Sunday, July 1st, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, Tom lived a full and inspiring life defined by faith, dedication to family, country, and community.
Tom had a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, serving honorably for nearly 22 years in administrative roles. During his service, he completed one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam before retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. His commitment to serving others continued as he worked diligently for the State of Michigan in the employment services office and later at the Department of Social Services in Muskegon.
Tom had a passion for wood working, attending craft shows, fishing, and reading old western novels. He took deep pride in exploring genealogy, unearthing rich family histories to share with future generations. Tom served faithfully as a long time member of Faith Baptist Church where he cherished the friendships and community he made there. Tom loved to sing and whistle and was often heard sharing his cheerful tunes throughout the halls.
Tom is survived by his children, Thomas (Cindy) Leiter, Tammy (Tim) Stampfli, and Cindy (Steve) Ryberg. His legacy is further carried by his grandchildren, Sarah (Dan) Orlee, Emma (Brandon Meyer) Leiter, Nick (Maryann) Stampfli, Megan (Javier Womeldorff) Stampfli, Daniel (Amber) Peterson, and Tim (Karla) Peterson, along with his cherished great-grandchildren: Brielle Peterson, Elise Peterson, Madeleine Peterson, Kai Peterson, Henry Stampfli, Oliver Stampfli, Alex Joy, Nora Elise, Riley Orlee, and Oliver Orlee. Tom is also survived by his dear siblings, Norma Bozak and George Little. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert Emory and Evelyn Leiter; his wife, Bessie (Rene) Lorene Leiter; his brothers Bill and Bob Leiter; and his sisters, Darlene Northup and Geri Leiter.
The family would like to thank the incredible staff of the Michigan Veterans Home of Grand Rapids, MI for their wonderful care of Tom. Memorial contributions can be made to the Michigan Veterans Home in Grand Rapids or to Newaygo County Community Services. A celebration of Tom's life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Crandell Funeral Home - Fremont Chapel.
