Dick Taylor, age 76 of Newaygo, passed away Saturday, September 2, 2000 at his home. Harry M. Taylor was born March 3, 1924 in Newaygo to John Roy and Florence May (Dillon) Taylor. As a young man he worked as a fishing guide on the Muskegon River and was well known as a skilled fisherman and hunter. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during W.W. II as Seaman First Class on the USS Slomons. During the war he met Elizabeth M. Thompson in Tacoma, Washington. She later moved to Newaygo where they were married on June 29, 1945. He was discharged from the service in November 1945. Together they lived the rest of their lives in the home they built in Newaygo. He worked for many years for the Arrow Newaygo Foundry and was a member of the Newaygo V.F.W. Spprtmans Post #4249. Elizabeth (Betty) preceded him in death in 1994. Together they raised 5 children, Susan (Joseph) Cronk of Salem, IL; Richard L. (Beverly) Taylor of Newaygo; Barbara (Tom) Weller of Alto; Kay (Dudley) Smith of White Cloud; and Ronald Taylor of Pierson. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mabil Green and Betty Rundel both of Arkansas and a brother, William of Collinsville, IL. 2 brothers, Roy (Timer) and John (Tub) Taylor preceded him in death. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 from the Crandell Funeral Home Chapel in White Cloud with interment in the Newaygo Cemetery with full military honors by the Newaygo V.F.W. Post 4249. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fremont Area Foundation Endowment Fund for Hospice or to the Newaygo V.F.W. Post 4249 in Newaygo.
