Dixie L. Dawe, age 78 of Fremont, passed away Friday, May 15, 2015 at her home following a short illness. Dixie was born on September 30, 1936 in Grand Rapids to Arthur Dell and Theresa Alberta (Yakes) VandenBerg and has been a lifelong resident of the Fremont area. Dixie graduated from Fremont High School and later became a surgical technician at Gerber Memorial Hospital where she worked for 38 years until her retirement. Dixie married Fred Dawe on September 5, 1993 in Fremont. She was a charter member of the Church of The Living Christ. Dixie enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Texas and had been active in community theater. Dixie volunteered at Con Mis Manso Deaf Ministry and had also worked with SOS Ministry in Mexico where she coordinated a soup kitchen that fed hundreds of children and families every winter. She also assisted in building homes during mission trips. Dixie is survived by her husband, Fred of Fremont; her step children, Robin (Rhonda) Dawe of Fremont; Andrea (Henry) Yang of Houston, Texas; her step grandchildren, Michelle (Terry) Tan; Kari Dawe, Dr. Kevin Yang; Logan Yang; 2 step great grandchildren, Emily and Ethan Tan; her brothers, Robert (Trena) VandenBerg of Fremont; Terry (Jill) VandenBerg of Fremont; her nieces and nephews, Troy (Michelle) VandenBerg; Quinn (Carrie) VandenBerg; Paige (Ray) Troyer; Shannon (Pete) Sheppard; Thor (Kim) VandenBerg. Following her wishes, private memorial services will be held at a later date following cremation.
