Obituary

Donald L. "Don" Heaven, age 80 of Hesperia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Green Acres of Fremont. Don was born on April 4, 1942 in Grand Rapids to Milton and Ethelyn (Wride) Heaven. Don married Mary Kay Scripps on September 15, 1962 in Cascade and later moved to the Hesperia area from the Ada/Cascade area and has been a resident of the Hesperia area for the past 50 years. Don graduated from Lowell High School in 1959 and later graduated from Aquinas College with a Bachelors Degree in Business. Don started work at the Gerber Products Company in the Research Department until his retirement in 1996. Don became involved in the Dogwood Performing Arts Center in Fremont in the early stages and was instrumental in the planning, construction and operation of the Dogwood Center for several years. Don served as the Technical Director at the Dogwood Performing Arts Center from 2003 until his final retirement. Don had been active in the Stage Door Players for many years and served as the Director of several productions including, Grease, Oliver, The King and I, and Annie. Don was involved in the Boy Scouts of American in Cascade and became a Eagle Scout in his younger years, was a member of the Fremont Lions Club and former member of the Hesperia Lions Club. Don enjoyed playing tennis, had received his Captains License for sailing and enjoyed sailing all the Great Lakes, sailing to and around Bermuda and also in the Caribbean. He enjoyed watching all sports, his dog Tucker and spending time with his family at his home. Don was a member of the Hesperia Presbyterian Church. Don is survived by his wife, Mary Kay of Hesperia; his children, Gail (James) King of Buckley, Michigan; Jerry (Diane) Heaven of Hesperia; Doug (Tricia) Heaven of Hesperia; Joy Heaven of Hesperia; 3 grandchildren, Jessica (significant other, Brandin) Heaven, Bryan Heaven and Hannah Kidder; 2 great grandchildren, Lexi and Kelby Tinkham; his sister, Barbara DeJong of Grand Rapids. VISITATION : Sunday, November 6, 2022 from 1:30pm – 3:00 pm at the Dogwood Performing Arts Center Black Box 4734 S. Campus Court Fremont MI 49412 with FUNERAL SERVICES at 3:00 pm at the Dogwood Performing Arts Century Black Box. Friends may consider memorial contributions to the Dogwood Performing Arts Center in memory of Don. Interment will take place at the Volney Cemetery near Walkerville.
