Donald Dean Mahoney, age 92 of Grant, formerly of Lakeside and Twin Lake, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023 at his home following a short illness. Donald was born on April 1, 1931 in Big Rapids to John Marshall and Leah (Coon) Mahoney and graduated from Big Rapids High School. He later met and married Gaynor O'Neil on June 7, 1952 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Big Rapids. Gaynor preceded him in death on December 21, 2020. Don had served in the United States Navy during the Korean War until his honorable discharge. Don had been a self employed builder and owned and operated Mahoney Building and Remodeling for many years. Don was a member of the St. Michael Catholic Church in Brunswick. Don enjoyed fishing, hunting going to the family cottage on McLaren Lake and Long Lake, water skiing snowmobiling and simply enjoying the Michigan outdoors. Don truly treasured the time he spent with his family at family gatherings.
Donald is survived by his children, Colleen (Greg) Fraser; Karen Griswold; Carol (David) Dostert; Kathy (Mike) Patterson; Larry (Kim) Mahoney; Theresa (Nick Paschal) Trevino; Gary (Lisa) Mahoney; Lisa (Brian) Frederick; 25 grandchildren; 54 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Gaynor and his granddaughter, Corinne Wallace; son-in-law, Bill Griswold; sister, Winnifred Sunquist; brother, Charles Mahoney.
MASS OF RESURRECTION will be held on Monday, October 2, 2023 at 11am at the St. Michael Catholic Church in Brunswick with a VISITATION 1 hour prior to the services at the church. Military Honors will be given following the Mass Services. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : Friends may consider memorial contributions to the Harbor Hospice in memory of Donald.
