Obituary

Donald Wilder Potter, age 89 of Fremont, passed away Friday, February 21, 2020 at the Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. Don was born on January 19, 1931 in Fremont to Henry Donald and Gertrude A. (Christenson) Potter and graduated from Fremont High School in 1949. Don later graduated from Davenport Business College and Drake University. Don married Vicki Susan Reineke on June 9, 1956 in Fremont and together they had been married 54 ½ years until Vicki's passing on November 12, 2010. Don had worked at Gerber Products Company in Fremont for 36 years in the marketing, accounting, personnel and employee counseling departments and had managed the employee benefits and retirement functions until his retirement on April 1, 1991. Don joined the United States Coast Guard and served during the Korean War until his honorable discharge and was a member of the American Legion Post #225 in Lansing. Don had been a member of the International Society of Retirement Planning where he had served on the Board of Directors and had been Past President; had been a member of the West Michigan Retirement Planners and had been Past President; served on Governor Milliken's and Governor Blanchard's retirement planning task force. Don was also active in and served on the first Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity in Newaygo County; was a 48 year member, had served on the Board of Directors and was Past President of United Way of Newaygo County. Don was a member of the First Congregational Church where he had served as Moderator, had been the coordinator of the Fremont Lenten Breakfast for 20 years; coordinator of the Fremont Men's Interfaith Breakfasts; had been President of First Congregational Church Men's Fellowship. Don also was elected as the Sheridan Township Clerk where he served for 8 years and later served as a trustee, served on the Joint Planning Commission with Sheridan Township, the City of Fremont and Sherman Township until 2012; and served on the Michigan State Boundary Commission for 4 years. Don joined the Fremont Lions Club in 1972 and held almost every position within the Fremont Lions Club and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 2011. He had donated over 10 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross and had been a driver for the Amish community for 15 years. In 1993, Don received the Newaygo County Volunteer Award for outstanding contributions to the residents of Newaygo County. Don is survived by his children, Melissa (Todd) Hendrix of Fremont; his son, Todd M. Potter of Black Foot, Idaho; his granddaughters, Elyse Hendrix of Fremont; Kyla (Andrew) Rumsey of Walkerville; his great grandchildren, Braxton Dane Wilder Hendrix, Knox Rumsey, Baylor Rumsey, Steely Rumsey; his sister, Dianne (Tom) Kempf of Fremont; his aunt, Joyce Johnson of Newaygo; several nieces and nephews and cousins. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki Susan Potter on November 12, 2010.
