Obituary

MAN SOUGHT BY DEA FOR YEARS FINALLY BOXED IN!!

Donald Erickson Shain, 74, of Croton, Michigan passed away on March 12, 2026, at his home with his wife and children huddled together praying by his side.

Don was born on June 30, 1951 in Reading, PA to Edward and Ethelyn (Erickson) Shain. Don completed their family along with big sister Carol. Don always said he grew up in an idyllic age. Don attended and graduated from Exeter Township High School in 1969. His senior year of high school was a challenge for him. He was in a horrific car accident on Nov. 1, 1968. He spent 3 1/2 months in traction in the hospital. In Don's true sense of "I can do anything", he walked the stage on crutches to receive his diploma. While in a full leg cast, he hitchhiked to Woodstock to enjoy the music and extracurricular vices that were available. After high school, Don attended Brandywine Junior College in Wilmington, Delaware. He then moved over the Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ in 1973 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Commerce, or more appropriately a Masters in how to party. Don was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.

After College, Don went to work for VF Corporation selling Lee Jeans to "mom and pop" stores in many different states. He was transferred to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan in 1975. While there, he was awarded the Salesman of the Year at the national level. Don was very proud of this accomplishment as he was the quintessential salesman. His father-in-law used to say that Don could sell an ice cube to an eskimo and then laugh with his great humor. Don continued following his talent until retirement in 2015.

On February 15, 1985, Don met Shelley Hoffman Oros in the frozen food aisle of Eberhard grocery stores. Big brother Joe was joined by Edward Phillip Lee on June 16, 1986. On July 19, 1987, they welcomed Jacob Donald Erickson to the family. Don and Shelley were married on October 16, 1987, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. On March 14, 1990, Rebekah Laurell Mae completed the family.

Don is survived by his wife, Shelley, and children; Joe, Edward (Jenny), Jacob (Brieanna), and Rebekah (Joe). He also leaves behind his grandchildren; Caleb Oros, Kaylee and Ashlee Shain, and Liam Wilton, his sister; Carol Vanschenkhof, his mother-in-law; Connie Hoffman, his brother and sister-in-law; Bob and Emily Hoffman, along with several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law; Garland Hoffman and cousin; Eric Moore, brother-in-law; Jim Hoffman, and nephew; Ryan Hoffman.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at 12:15pm at Croton Cemetery, 4993 Croton Drive, Newaygo, MI 49337, for all that would like to come. Arrangements have been entrusted to Crandell Funeral Home - Fremont Chapel.
