Dorothy V. "Dottie" Backus, age 96 of Hesperia, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2018 at the Riverside Nursing Center in Grand Haven. Dorothy was born on September 23, 1922 in Stevenson, Maryland to Samuel and Margaret V. (Hare) Lafferty and later married John Backus on December 1942 in Baltimore. John preceded her in death in 1973. Dorothy moved to the Hesperia area in 1945 from Baltimore and had worked in the housekeeping department at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont until her retirement and then started working at the Hesperia Library until her final retirement. Dorothy was an active member of the Hesperia United Methodist Church where she had been active in the Women's Circle. She had been active with the Hesperia Public Library where she had been a board member, enjoyed reading and enjoyed going out for dinner. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Sandra Entsminger of Grand Haven; her grandchildren and great grandchildren – Dawn (Michael) VanAsperen and their children, Alex, Megan, and Jacob; Debra (Todd) Behm and their children, Mason and Parker; Allen (Mary) Entsminger and their son, Carter. Dorothy was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Lee Entsminger; 2 sisters and 4 brothers. VISITATION : Saturday, December 29, 2018 from 11am – 12pm at the Hesperia United Methodist Church.
