Duane A. Mater, age 82 of Fremont, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at the Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. Duane was born on September 15, 1929 in Applegate, Michigan to Arnold and Ina (Powell) Mater and later married Lottie Hill on February 2, 1957 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Duane had worked in the asbestos industry in California and later moved back to Fremont where he had been a truck driver for Gilliland Transfer for 20 years until his retirement in 1991. Duane served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Duane has been a longtime resident of Fremont where he had been an active member of the Fremont Moose Lodge #1555, had enjoyed collecting coins, reading, spending time with his grand daughters and watching the Detroit Tigers. Duane truly enjoyed spending time on the golf course and was a member of the Northwood Golf Club where he played in several leagues and also collected golf balls. Duane is survived by his wife, Lottie of Fremont; his children, Duane (Julie) Mater Jr. and daughter, Claire, of Encinitas, California; Diane Mater (Kenneth Fish) and daughter Grace of Lansing, Michigan; his brother, Dalton (Evie) Mater of Fremont; sisters, Gayle (Charles) Dore of Fremont; Dolores (Glen) Klomp of Whitehall; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Willie Johnson. VISITATION : Friday, October 28, 2011 from 6-8pm at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. FUNERAL MEMORIAL SERVICES : Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 11am at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. INTERMENT : Maple Grove Cemetery.
