Earl L. Meyers, age 90 of Fremont, passed away Monday, April 27, 2020 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont following a short illness. Earl was born on October 31, 1929 in Fremont to Gerrit and Anna Meyer. Earl tried to join the military at the age of 15, but was denied until he later turned 17 and then he joined the United States Army until his honorable discharge. Earl returned to Fremont after his discharge and married Hazel M. Bitson on April 1, 1950 in Fremont and Hazel preceded him in death on December 25, 2017. The next day after their marriage, Earl and Hazel moved to Chicago where Earl attended, what is now the ITT Technical Institute, until his graduation. They returned to Fremont where Earl began his over 40 year career at Gerber Products Company until his retirement in the late 1980's. Earl was a member of the First Reformed Church in Fremont and enjoyed traveling with Hazel and his family throughout the country to archery tournaments and eventually in his retirement, spending winters in San Benito, Texas. Earl started the Fremont Fish and Game Indoor Archery Center in Fremont in 1957 and also started the Youth Junior Olympic Archery Club in 1971. Earl has placed his handprint on thousands of lives through the years with the youth including several National Titles the youth have achieved under his guidance. Through all his years however, his family was the most important to Earl and he treasured the time he spent with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren including bow hunting and successfully harvesting a deer with his bow in 2018.
Earl is survived by his children, Sue (Art) Romska of Clio, Michigan; Cathy (Morris) Rottman of Fremont; Glenn Meyers of Fremont; his grandchildren, Amanda (Jimmy) Fox; Krista (Ryan) Montgomery; Philip (Jenny) Baston; Desi (Evan) Thorne; 8 great grandchildren; his son-in-law, Rick Wray; several nieces and nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel on December 25, 2017; his daughter, Dorothy Wray on November 24, 2012; his brothers and sister, Glenn, William, Jean and Bernice.
VISITATION – Drive in visitation on Saturday, May 23, 2020 from 12-1pm at the First Reformed Church 348 E Main Street Fremont MI 49412. FUNERAL SERVICES: Drive in funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at 1pm at the First Reformed Church 348 E Main Street Fremont MI 49412. INTERMENT : Maple Grove Cemetery.
