Ed R. Mooney, age 66 of Fremont, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Ed was born on September 12, 1941 in Lansing to Robert T. and Ina R. (Springer) Mooney and moved to Fremont at an early age. Ed graduated from Fremont High School in 1959 and attended Central Michigan University until he started work at the Gerber Products Company where he worked for 40 years until his retirement as the manager of the accounts payable department in 1998. After retirement, Ed continued to work part time at the Gerber Products Company in the grounds department, driving for Gerber car service and as a delivery driver for Laser Dynamics in Allendale. Ed met and later married Barbara A. Voss on June 15, 1963 in Fremont. Ed was an active member of the Fremont Christian Church, DOC where was currently serving as a deacon and Treasurer. He had a special love for his red 1967 Mustang convertible, which he bought, restored and gave many rides in over the years. Ed was also very active in dog showing where Ed and Barb raised and showed Irish Setters in conformation with Ed showing in the ring and Barb grooming. He leaves behind six Irish Setters and many special friends in the Irish Setter Club of Michigan, Irish Setter Club of America and the dog world in general. Ed also volunteered for 25 years on the Fremont High School Football chain gang each football season. Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, during gatherings, holidays, social events, and attending his childrens and grandchildrens sporting events throughout the years. Ed was a member of the Fremont Moose Lodge #1555 for many years, enjoyed playing golf, had been a bowler for many years and was an avid Detroit Red Wings fan. Ed had other special interests including a fondness for the outdoors, working in his yard, boating and spending time by the water, with many trips to Gulf Shores, Alabama. Ed was model train collector and like to search e-bay for train cars and then set up the models and to show his friends and family. Ed is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara; his children, Michael E. (Tressia) Mooney of Bellaire, Michigan; Paula L. (Stephen) Mayers of Allendale, Michigan; five grandchildren, Nathan Cook, Jade Tallman, Cassandra Mayers, Zachary Mayers, Kameron Mayers; his mother, Ina R. Mooney of Fremont; sister, Shirley A. (Charles) Nelson of Sahuarita, Arizona; brothers, David R. Mooney of Tire, Turkey; Robert J. (Sherry) Mooney of Charlotte, North Carolina; his mother-in-law, Beulah Voss of Fremont; brother-in-law, Robert J. (Gail) Voss of Louden, Tennessee; sister-in-law, Donna J. (Robert) Hansen of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Mooney in 1997 and his father-in-law, Donald Voss in 1993. Funeral services were held on Sunday at 2pm at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. with Rev. David Dickinson of the Fremont Christian Church DOC presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont.
