Edmund W. duChemin, Sr. age 90 of Croton, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2019 at his home following a short illness. Ed was born on July 7, 1929 in Battle Creek to Albert Whitford and Esther (Cromack) duChemin and later graduated from Newaygo High School in 1947. Ed joined the United States Army where he served during the Korean War. Ed met and married Kathryn A. Finkbiner on June 20, 1952 in Grand Rapids. Ed started working at the Dawes Chemical in Newaygo and later moved to Harbor Beach, Michigan where he began work at Midland Dow Chemical where he worked as Plant Services Manager until his retirement in 2007. After retirement, Ed and Kathryn moved back to the Croton area on a permanent basis where Ed enjoyed working in his woodshop – making birdfeeders and bird houses; watching and feeding the birds; and watching Lawrence Welk on television. Ed was a life member of the Harbor Beach American Legion #197 and had been a Boy Scout Leader for many years. Ed has also been a firefighter for over 70 years and had served as chief of the Harbor Beach Fire Department and served on the Croton Township Fire Department until his final retirement from fire service in 2018. Ed is survived by his wife of 67 years, Kathryn of Croton; his son, Edmund W. (Elizabeth) duChemin Jr. of Franksville, Wisconsin; his daughter, Doris A. (James) Gourlay of Traverse City; 5 grandchildren – Tina (Casey) Schaub, Tami (Scott Podell) Gourlay, Treasa (Josh) Merchant, Anthony Gourlay, Matt (Beth) duChemin; 11 great grandchildren; his brother, Albert (Nancy) duChemin; his sister, Edna M. (Neil) Knutson. Ed was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Tracy Gourlay in 2011; his grandson, Mark duChemin in 2019 and his brother, John duChemin.
