Edward M. Kerns, age 75 of Fremont, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2016 at his home. Edward was born on May 29, 1941 in Fremont to Aden Jack and Ruth B. (Barnett) Kerns and joined the United States Army at an early age. Ed served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he had served in the Special Forces, and had conducted Jungle Training School in Panama. Ed retired as a Sgt. First Class in July 1986 after over 20 years of service. After his discharge, Ed moved back to the Fremont area where he enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing cards with his friends and had been a Detroit Tigers Baseball fan. Ed is survived by his children, Ed (Kamelia) Kerns II of Fremont; Terri (Ryan) DeJongh of Holland; his grandchildren, Felipe, Calvin, Hans, Megan, and Seth; special friend and caregiver, Sylvia Frederick of Fremont; his brothers and sisters, Virginia Keenan of Lexington, Kentucky; Aden (Julie Zenk) Kerns of Fremont; Mildred Tyler of Fremont; Harriet Converse of Spring Lake; and Katherine (Robert) VanOpynen of Coopersville; his son, Michael A. Kerns of Fremont. Ed was preceded in death by his father and mother, Aden Jack and Ruth Kerns and by his sister, Polly Ada Neuhaus. VISITATION : Friday, July 8, 2016 from 12-2pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. FUNERAL SERVICES : Friday, July 8, 2016 at 2pm at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel with Military Rites given at the funeral home. INTERMENT : Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont.
