Elaine Ruth Brooks, age 62 of La Jolla, California, formerly of Fremont, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on Thursday, July 24, 2003. Elaine was born on September 28, 1940 in Fremont to Fred and Mabel Brooks. She graduated from Fremont High School, later from Albion College and completed her graduate work at Scripps Institute. She had been a marine biologist for 20 years at the University of California San Diego where she taught and developed groundbreaking programs in urban ecology. She was an advocate for the homeless, mentally ill, battered women and tireless environmental and social activist. She is survived by her mother, Mabel Brooks of Fremont; her brother, Jack Brooks of Fremont; and a host of loving friends, colleagues, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Brooks on July3, 2003. Funeral memorial services were held on Thursday, August 14, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. from the Riverside Park in Newaygo.
