Obituary

Kangas, Elmer L. Elmer L. Kangas, age 95 of Muskegon, formerly of White Cloud, passed away Friday, December 22, 2006 at the Harbor Hospice, Poppen Hospice Residence in Muskegon. Elmer was born on January 16, 1911 in South Range, Michigan to Louis and Ina (Nurmesniemi) Kangas and later married Lorrayne Kovaniemi on October 21, 1945 in Eveleth, Minnesota. Lorrayne preceded him in death on August 12, 2003. Elmer grew up in the South Range area, attended and graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelors of Education Degree and later attended and received his Master Degree in Education from Stout University in Wisconsin. He moved to the White Cloud area in 1946 and began teaching physics and industrial arts at White Cloud High School until his retirement. Elmer was a member of the former Masonic Lodge in White Cloud and currently Arcana Masonic Lodge in Hesperia. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling. Elmer also served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia (Joseph) Gerhardt of Muskegon; 1 niece, Nancy Kangas Eason; 2 nephews, Norman Kangas and James Janda. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorrayne on August 12, 2003 and by his brothers, Eino and Eli and sister, Esther Cushing. . Funeral memorial services with Masonic Rites and Military Rites were held on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at the Crandell Funeral Home White Cloud Chapel. Interment is in the White Cloud Cemetery. Friends may consider the White Cloud District Library or Fraternal Order of Police, Ben Bradford Lodge for memorial contributions in memory of Elmer.
