Emily L. Fisk, age 95 of Byron Center, formerly of Fremont, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2021 at the Railside Assisted Living Center in Byron Center.
Emily, also known as Emigail, (Emily Abigail) was born to Jerome and Winifred Lilly on February 21, 1926 at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids. She was an only child and grew up in a home on 76th Street. She was very close with her cousin, Lily who lived right down the hill from them. She had no brothers or sisters, so she played often with Lily and they became lifelong friends. Emily attended Kent District 4 right on the corner of 76th Street and Burlingame Avenue thru Eighth Grade and then attended South Grand Rapids High School on Hall Street and graduated in 1943. She attended Otterbein College in Oho but later moved to Lansing to attend Michigan State College and graduated with seven other students with a degree in psychology/philosophy.
Emily's first job was for the Grand Rapids Urban League Brough Community Center. Later she got a job in Newaygo County working for the State of Michigan. After a few years she was offered a job in the lab at Gerber Products in Fremont where she met her husband. They worked together for a few years before William was transferred to Rochester, New York. William came back a few months later and asked Emily's hand in marriage. They were married on May 1, 1953 at the Carlisle Church on 76th Street that was right next to her childhood home.
Emily and William started their family in Rochester. Their first son, Jerry (William J.) was born just eleven months later and in 1955, they had their daughter, Lily. It was about this time that Bill's job transferred them to Niagara Falls, Canada.
After a few years there were again transferred, this time to Asheville, North Carolina. They built a home in the mountains and shortly after had their third child, John, in 1962. They live in North Carolina for nine years before Bill's job once again transferred them back to Fremont, Michigan. Emily stayed at home caring for her children until their youngest son started school. She went back to work for the Newaygo County Community Service as a social worker for twelve years before retiring. After they both retired they loved spending their winter months in Asheville, North Carolina.
After Emily lost her husband, she stayed in their home in Fremont for five years and moved in 2003 to a new condo development on 76th Street down from her childhood home. Emily moved to Railside Assisted Living in Byron Center in November 2016.
Emily had been an active member of the St. John's Episcopal Church in Fremont where she had served on various boards and committees throughout the years and was a member of the Carlisle United Methodist Church in Byron Center where she sang in the choir. Emily was a lifelong donor to many charitable organizations. She loved spending time with family and friends, especially on her beloved front porch. She was a beautiful soprano and enjoyed singing, playing piano and sang in the choir at the Carlisle Methodist Church. She believed the greatest joy in life was to give of yourself to others.
Emily is survived by her children, Lily Beth Perla of Grand Haven, MI; William J. "Jerry" (Judith Ann) Fisk of Byron Center, MI; John W. (Joan Marie) Fisk of Dayton, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.
Following Emily's wishes, cremation has taken place. MEMORIAL SERVICES : Saturday, May 21 ,2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Carlisle United Methodist Church 1084 76th Street SW Byron Center MI 49315.
