Smalligan, Esther Esther Smalligan, age 92 of Fremont, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Esther was born on July 31, 1911 in Garfield Township, Newaygo County to Thomas M. and Nora Caroline (Christenson) Vile and married Peter Smalligan on November 25, 1932 in Indiana. Peter preceded her in death on July 25, 1996. She had taught school at County Normal and Vera Wiltsie Grade School and retired in 1969. In 1941, she started work as a field rep. for the UDSA, one of the first women to hold this position. She was active in township government, having served on the zoning board and census taker for many years. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Watson of Phoenix, Arizona, her son, Paul (Mary) Smalligan of Alamo, California; daughter-in-law, Marcia Smalligan of Newaygo; grandchildren, Robert Fry of Phoenix, Arizona; Larry (Joan) Smalligan of Fremont; Susan Smith of Clare, Michigan; Jennie, Katy, and Laura Smalligan of Alamo, California; many great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter on July 25, 1996; her son, David on March 29, 2004; her brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Martha Vile. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 10, 2004 from the Crandell Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Grunow of the New Life Assembly of God Church in White Cloud with interment in the Newaygo Cemetery.
