Evelyn Mae "Evie" Mater, age 85 of Sparta, formerly of Fremont, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2020 following a short illness at the Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids. Evie was born on January 3, 1935 in Fremont to George William and Leona Marie (Martin) Carrier and later married Dalton "Delty" Mater on January 3, 1953 in Fremont. Delty preceded her in death on January 1, 2019. Evie has been a lifelong resident of the Fremont area where she had been a telephone operator for Michigan Bell Telephone and later worked at MISCO in Whitehall until her retirement in 1984. Evie was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont and enjoyed flower gardening, baking and cooking, visiting with friends, crocheting and knitting and always enjoyed a party with family and friends. Evie truly treasured the time she spent with her family and grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always caring for others in her family and community with meals or care packages. Evie is survived by her children, Karla Charles of Rockford; Kathy (Steve) VanHouten of Sparta; Arnie (Pam) Mater of Fremont; Lea (Terry) Jones of Rockford; Lisa Kelly of Ferrysburg; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; her sister, Doris Johnson of Fremont; several nieces and nephews. Evie was preceded in death by her husband, Delty; her sisters, Vivian Bixeman, Virginia DeWitt and Marie Deuling; her brothers, William Carrier, George Carrier and Alvin Carrier.
