Obituary

Floyd N. Head Jr., 91, of Fremont and Green Valley, Arizona passed away on April 7, 2012. He was born on June 14, 1920 in San Mateo, California where he lived until graduation from San Mateo Junior College at which time he joining the Army Air Corps in January 1942. In May of 1942 he married the love of his life, Betty Lou Ackemann who preceded him in death on April 20, 2008. Together they had four children; Daniel (Gabriela) of Sacramento, California, Ronald of Phoenix, Arizona, Gary (Nancy) of Fremont and DeWitt, Michigan and Susan who passed away in February of 2000. Floyd is also survived by his five wonderful grandchildren, Nicole (Eric) Lewis, Ryan (Heather) Head, Aubrey (Jonathan) Cobbett, David Head, Tyler Head and 5 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. After a 36 months tour in the South Pacific Theater during WWII, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, Floyd returned to California and in 1946 began working for Gerber Products Company as a general salesman. He worked at Gerbers for 39 years, retiring as Executive Vice-President Corporate in June of 1985; at which time he and Betty Lou purchased a winter home in Arizona to escape the cold Michigan winters. Each spring they returned to their family home in Fremont for lots of golf, bridge and social fun with their many friends. Floyd and his family were members of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Fremont and as an active churchman he was awarded the Bishops Cross for his service to the Church. The Fremont Area Foundation was one of the many charities and non-profit organizations that he and Betty Lou supported during their more than 50 years in Fremont. Floyd enjoyed spending time on the golf course with his many friends and colleagues, but most especially with his three sons. He was an avid reader and most days could be found in the Fremont Memorial Library reading newspapers, magazines and walking the stacks. He was also a regular donor to the Librarys book acquisition fund. On Wednesdays he was a regular attendee at the retired mens luncheon held at The Side Street Caf. An Episcopal Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April14, 2012 at 11:00 am at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fremont with a private interment at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
