Obituary

Franklin Delano Tyson was born to the union of Lola and Antoine Tyson on November 9th, 1933 , in Woodland Park , Michigan . He was the ninth child in a family of ten children and the youngest son. Franklin was born during the Great Depression which had been blamed on President Hoover. During this period, families lived on $5.00 a month government subsidy. There were no jobs anywhere, President Roosevelt, elected in 1932, raised the stipend for families during this terrible depression. One day when Franklin s mother (Lola) received the familys stipend for the month, the family held hands and prayed the check would be $10.00 instead of the usual $5.00. When his mother opened the envelope, to everyones amazement, they found a check for $20.00! Praise God and the President! Thus, the youngest son was named Franklin Delano Tyson. Franklin attended grammar school in the one-room schoolhouse in Woodland Park , along with his brothers and sisters. He attended high school in Walkerville , Michigan , and graduated in 1952. Franklin loved baseball and was considered to an outstanding player, as was his older brother James. Franklin and his brother James sometimes dreamed about professional baseball, but in those days there was no proper sponsorship available and no one cared about Black ball players. Growing up on a lake also nurtured his love for the water. He later earned his certification in scuba diving and as a lifeguard. After high school, Franklin moved to Chicago , where he attended Washburn Trade School for auto mechanics. He met Ruby Jernigan and they were married in 1954. To this union was born three sons: Franklin Jr., Tony, and Derek Tyson, who still reside in Chicago . Franklin was employed at Ford Motor Company for approximately ten years and later at Branchs Candy Company for nineteen years as a machinist engineer. He absolutely loved returning home to Michigan for Thanksgiving and was an avid Chicago Bulls fan. He leaves in Gods hands to cherish his memory, his three loving, steadfast, and faithful sons: Franklin Delano, Anthony DeWayne (Sheree), and Derek Alan; three beautiful and adoring grandchildren, Daneille LeFay, Milan Fanelle, and Malcom Anthony. Franklin was also married to Mildred Henderson and Joyce White who preceded him in death. Besides these wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, Lola and Antoine, four brothers, Victor (Eddie), Alexander, Antoine (Billy) and James, two sisters, Woodland and Ina, and Mildreds son, Billy Henderson. Also left to remember Franklin with love and affection are his daughter, Deborah Jennings, Brenda Murray and his grandchildren, Candace, Aaliyah and Christopher. We also thank God for his loving and devoted daughters, Kitty (Marquita and Ernie (Ernestine) White who maintained a watchful eye over our beloved Franklin throughout his illness. They along with their brother, Emerson and Joyces grandchildren; Cameron, Rainey, Dexter Warren, Doriaon, Aarion, Marquis and Areese are left to cherish his memory. We also thank God for Franklin Jr. who attended his father during his illness. Franklins two sisters and brother, Josephine Plaut of Chicago, IL, Virginia Proctor (Eugene) of Grand Rapids, MI, and Herman Tyson of Chicago, IL as well as surviving sister-in-law, Lorraine Tyson of Woodland Park will forever have fond memories, undying love and devotion for their youngest brother. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved him dearly, will always remember him with affection and tenderness. He was deeply loved and will be deeply missed.
