It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Ernest Palmiter, fondly known as a loving father, devoted partner, and cherished friend. Gary departed this world on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at the age of 80, at his home in Newaygo, MI. Born on December 27, 1944, in Monroe, Michigan, to Harley W. Palmiter and Erma Palmiter, Gary thrived in life with a warmth that extended to everyone he met. A proud graduate of Huron High School in the class of 1962, Gary's journey in life was marked by dedication, loyalty, and service.
Gary served honorably in the United States Navy, where he played a part in the Cuban Crisis, further showcasing his unwavering patriotism and love for his country. Upon returning to civilian life, he committed 25 years of service as a Jail Maintenance Manager with Newaygo County, where his diligence and leadership left an indelible mark on his colleagues and community. His life was enriched by the joy he found in fishing, karaoke, golf, playing cards, watching westerns, and cherishing moments with his family. In his youth, he was an avid softball and bowling enthusiast.
Gary is survived by his beloved children, Kristine Palmiter, Kevin Palmiter and Kelly Palmiter; his significant other, Annabelle Furgason, and her children; Monica (Joey) Wright, Jeremy (Jennifer) Kooistra, and Christina (Brad) Poss. He leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Gary is also remembered by his siblings: Patricia (James) Wiseley, Terry (Debbie) Palmiter of Carthage, and Roger Palmiter. Preceding him in death were his parents, Harley and Erma Palmiter, and sister-in-law Vickie Palmiter.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation at Crandell Funeral Home Inc in White Cloud, MI, on Saturday, March 8th, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and again on Sunday, March 9th, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. A funeral service will follow on Sunday, March 9th, 2025, at 1:00 pm at Crandell Funeral Home, with honors conducted by the Newaygo VFW. A memorial celebration will take place afterward at VFW Post 4249 in Newaygo, MI, at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Ben Bradford FOP Lodge 135 at PO Box 36 Fremont, MI 49412, a cause close to Gary's heart. Arrangements are entrusted to Crandell Funeral Home - White Cloud Chapel.
