Gene E. Johnson, age 90 of Monument, Colorado, formerly of White Cloud, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2022 in Colorado Springs following a short decline in his health. Gene was born on July 27, 1932 in White Cloud, one of four children, born to Chester and Frieda (Moore) Johnson. Gene graduated from White Cloud High School in 1950 where he enjoyed playing sports. Upon graduation, he joined the Army and served in Korea with the 739th Anti-aircraft Gun Battalion. After military service, Gene was employed at the General Motors plant in Lansing, Michigan where he developed his love of big cars and his lifelong commitment to buying American. Soon after, he found his true love, Joan (Eggerstedt), of White Cloud, MI. They married on June 17, 1955. Gene was characterized by his strong work ethic, and his devotion to his family, his country and his community. After a short stint in Lansing, Gene returned permanently to White Cloud and began work as a surveyor for the Newaygo County Surveyor's Office. His next career move was to buy and operate his own milk delivery service. He would deliver bottles of milk daily to residents of White Cloud and the surrounding area. In 1972, Gene sold his milk business and began working for the Newaygo Co. Equalization and Tax Mapping Office. After working in the Tax and Mapping Office for several years, Gene succeeded his uncle, Elmer Johnson, as the Newaygo County Treasurer, where he remained until he and Joan, who also worked for the Newaygo County government, retired in 1995. Gene, like many other community-oriented young men of his generation, served as a firefighter for the White Cloud Volunteer Fire Dept. He faithfully served White Cloud, and the surrounding community in this capacity for 31 years. His service often required him to awaken from sleep or leave work in the middle of the day to fight a fire, but it was also a place of camaraderie, pride, and friendship. In addition to Gene's service for the White Cloud Volunteer Fire Department, hewas a lifelong member of the White Cloud V.F.W and a member of Christ Lutheran Church. Gene absolutely loved sports, U of M Football, following White Cloud High School sports, hunting with his sons, and playing golf well into his 80's. He is survived by his wife Joan Eggerstedt Johnson; his sister Lorene Johnson Pharr of Dawsonville, GA., his son Kelly (& Shari) Johnson of Saratoga, CA, his son Kirk (&Richelle) Johnson of Monument, CO, his grandson Noah Johnson, currently attending the University of California at Davis, granddaughter Alexa Johnson of Saratoga, CA, grandson Ehren Johnson, currently serving the U.S. Navy in Hawaii, and granddaughter Anna Johnson, currently attending Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. A devoted uncle, he dearly loved his nieces and nephews and their families. Gene is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Coleen Johnson Foster of White Cloud, MI, and his brother Dean Johnson of Cadillac, MI. Following his wishes, cremation has taken place in Colorado and a joint Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Joan and Gene will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Christ Lutheran Church, 701 S.
