George Arthur McCastle, age 95 of Holton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at his home. George was born on May 23, 1929 in Muskegon to George Washington and Gertie Irene (Munroe) McCastle Jr. and later met and married Dolores Iona Schroeder on July 31, 1948 in Holton. Dolores preceded him in death on November 9, 2015. George has been a lifelong resident of the Holton/Fremont area where he had worked for C & O Railroad and retired as Foreman from CSX Railroad after 41 years of service. George was a fabricator, designer, inventor and builder all wrapped into one package. His mother said he was "extremely handy, like a pocket on a shirt" and was a man of many talents. He would often say when teaching others, "I showed you once" He designed and built his own home, a sawmill, and log cabin through the years and built equipment to assist with these hobbies. He enjoyed woodworking and built many wood items for family members and friends. He had been affiliated with the Ludington Old Engine Club, the Huber Museum in Marion, Ohio and enjoyed visiting his co-workers at the railroad retirees from West Michigan at their luncheons and gatherings.
George is survived by his children, Gary L. (Patty) McCastle of Greencastle, Indiana; Karen D. Nichols of Holton, Mark A. (Wanda) McCastle of Holton; 12 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; his sister and brothers, Alvin McCastle; Marlene McCastle, and Wayne (Darlene) McCastle; and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores; his daughters, Renee McCastle and Diane L. Moschke; a still born son, his grandson, Jared Nichols; brothers and sisters, Betty Tucker, Harold McCastle, Glen McCastle, Alice Teegarden, Dale McCastle, Joyce Kinstner.
VISITATION : Thursday, July 18, 2024 from 10-11am at the Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel. FUNERAL SERVICES : Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel with Rev. Wayne McCastle presiding. INTERMENT : Clark Cemetery near Fremont. LUNCHEON : Holton American Legion at 1:00 p.m. Friends may consider memorial contributions to the Salvation Army in memory of George.
