Obituary

George G. Powell, age 76 of Holton, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids following a short illness. George was born on September 11, 1938 in Greenwood Township to Gordon John and Mary Josephine (Rupar) Powell. George married Kathy Miner on June 12, 1982 in Fremont and has been a longtime resident of the Fremont area. George joined the United States Navy and after he returned from the services, started a demolition business with his father and in 1971 George and John Powell started Safeway Lumber Company until 1996. George also started White Ridge Farms, a citrus farm in Belize and the operation continues today. George also owned and operated Powell Excavators from 1996 to the present. George had a passion for corvettes and was a member of the National Council of Corvette Clubs and had served as the Governor of the Royal Corvettes Club of West Michigan for over 30 years. George was an avid reader and enjoyed woodworking. George is survived by his wife, Kathy of Holton; his children, Gordon Powell of Pentwater; Tanya Powell-Mulder of Fremont; his grandchildren, Maxwell Mulder; Taylor Mulder; Bode Powell; his sisters, Patricia (Richard) Borjeson of Berwyn, Pennsylvania; Diane (Edoardo) Laboccetta of Brooklyn, New York; Linda (Craig) Pell of Grand Rapids; several nieces and nephews; his dog, Ike. George was preceded in death by his sisters, Bernice Powell; Gayle Austin; Lauretta Hazelrigg. VISITATION : Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 2-3pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel with CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICES at 3pm at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel.
